History of International Neurosurgery

Abstract

Dr. Mauro Loyo Varela was born on November 30th, 1941, in the city of Veracruz. Not only was he an extraordinary surgeon, but he was also an unforgettable teacher. He held several academic positions in and outside the country. He taught 83 Latin American and Caribbean neurosurgeons with patience and devotion, always willing to share his knowledge without reservation. A man of singular talent, his contributions to neurosurgery were outstanding. From 1977 to 1986, he was the Chief of Neurosurgery Services at the IMSS National Medical Center. Between 1982 and 1990, he contributed to the design of numerous instruments and introduced several innovations to neurosurgery. In 1987, his hands were engraved in bronze on the Wall of the Kohnen Hospital in Sendai, Japan, as a homage to being one of the most prominent neurosurgeons in the world. He overcame several battles in a life full of dedication, perseverance, and clear goals without considering “would have” as an option. Constantly aware that the biological cycle of life is finite and that death is not a project for the future since it accompanies us from conception. He left physically on March 2nd, 2022, but he remains with each of his many friends and loved ones. It is with great spirits his aura transcends his own life. For more than five years, his battle with cancer did not find him without the maturity that only an intense life and a young mind-forged the character without petty attachments, always willing to fight with no hesitation.
